Driving to Edmonton

Today was our day to drive to Edmonton, Alberta, about 180 miles north of Calgary. I mentioned yesterday of the hope to see some fall colors. Not much. The drive was much like some of the scenery in NW Oklahoma -- flat wheat fields. There were a limited number of places where trees had been planted along the highway, but very little.

The local folks tell me that the soil is actually very shallow, sitting on top of a granite "shelf" so there isn't much opportunity to do anything but grow wheat in that area. There were cattle grazing in a few areas. Alberta is known as a big beef producer.

It's definitely autumn here. The temperature was -2 C when we left here this morning -- that's about 30 degrees F. It got up to +10 by mid-day (low 40's F), then dropped off again to about 6 C right now. The air is so crisp and clean -- it feels very much like the Minnesota autumn.

I'm jealous that you got to feel the "Minnesota" type autumn. I miss it, too. But, I'm happy you got to experience...even if I can't.
