"Rosh Hashana"

This evening is the beginning of the celebration of Rosh Hashana, known in the Bible as the "Feast of Trumpets", and known in the media as the Jewish New Year. As usual most observance of the Feast of Trumpets is in the Jewish communities around the world. Most Christians won't even know that it is happening, and even more won't know anything at all about it. And Muslims, ... well, you know. They'll probably skip it, too.

Christians for years have made a big deal out of Christmas and New Years and Easter and Mother's Day. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm all for celebrating any time we can. (They're having a national election campaign in Canada right now and one candidate is campaigning on a platform of having 6 more mandatory national holidays. What a deal. He'll get votes for that).

It's fun to celebrate -- I love it -- whatever it is we are celebrating. In the Bible there are 7 holidays (literally, 'Holy Days') described. And for some reason Christians have maintained that those days are for Jews, not for Christians. And then they proceed to emphasize holidays that were started by governments or greeting card companies.

Note: There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- in the Scriptures that says the 7 holidays of the Bible are only for Jews. And every single one of them points to God's work in the past and every one of them is a picture of all that Jesus Christ came to do and be for us. Maybe it's time to spend more time in the Bible and learn about these things. If Christians knew more about the Feast of Trumpets, I have a feeling there would be far more celebration!!

And get ready -- Yom Kippur is coming soon -- but more about that in a few days.
