It's Memorial Day 2007 and I hope you're having a great day. In Oklahoma and North Central Texas it is raining. It nearly always rains in Oklahoma and North Central Texas on Memorial Day weekend. My Mother used to wonder why anyone made plans for outdoor activities on Memorial Day weekend since most of the time it got moved inside.
When I was very young my parents called this "Decoration Day", a day when everyone went to the cemetaries to decorate the graves of their loved ones. The day was actually started after the Civil War to honor and remember those who had died in the war. Now it's pupose is to memorialize all who have given their lives on behalf of our country.
I'm thankful that we've had no one in our immediate family who we have had to memorialize in this manner. But way too many have. The media right now likes to focus on how unpopular the war in Iraq is. The fact is that if you read the history of the USA you'll find that there has never been a popular war. War is terrible -- nothing romantic about it in spite of the many movies. But it's because of the price paid by so many that we have the freedoms that we have.
We've had many in our family who served actively, including at least one uncle (now deceased) who got in the gliders and was towed and turned loose over Burma to glide in and fight behind enemy lines during World War II.
Let's remember to say "Thank You" to those who are serving -- and to those who have served our country.
Sure, it's a good day for a picnic (even if it's inside in Oklahoma and North Central Texas). I'll be driving home in the rain today. Whatever you do today, let's remember to give honor to those who have died for our freedom and to those who are currently serving!
God bless you and yours today! And may peace come soon.
