Meet Mila's Family

I have a few pictures of Mila's family to help me introduce them to you.

On Wednesday I first met Mila's Mom, Yolanda. She's a delightful lady who seemed so happy to meet us. She had met David on his previous trip, but this was our first meeting, of course. I was glad David was there to intrepret for us, but even the language barrier didn't slow us down.

I took some little gifts to Yolanda, including a little palm peeler. She immediately walked over to the market and bought an orange and some mangos so she could practice using it.

To introduce me to local fruit they gave me a grenadilla. David had a good laugh as I tried it out -- apparently not his favorite local fruit. It looks somewhat like an orange except for the stem out the top -- and the peeling is hard and crunchy.
Opening it is the shock -- it doesn't look anything at all like an orange. All those little things you see are seeds, each wrapped in some kind of gooey and slimy filling.

Yolanda and Mila assured me it was good; David suggested it was not. Sorry, but on this one David gets my vote. It wasn't bad -- this one was just sort of flavorless -- and the gooey substance made it difficult to try a whole lot of it. To be polite, I did eat about half of it, but that was all I could do.

Yolanda fixed us a lunch of fried and pressed flat plantains that were used as the shell for shredded cheese, meat and guacomole. I can't wait to find some plantains locally and try this out myself. It really was good! I do like plantains -- and now I know how to tell the sweet ones from the salty ones.

After lunch we walked several blocks to Mila's Grandpa's house. What a delightful man!! He is 79 years old, says he is starting to have memory issues and takes medication (I can't recall anyone in our family with memory problems) to help overcome it. Strangely enough his cat and I became pretty good friends -- at least the cat thought so. I scratched his head once as he walked by and he spent the rest of the visit on my lap.

You'll read more about Mila's family in a future blog, so keep coming back.

Many years ago my kids and I would try different fruits and things we had never tried before. I'm glad we didn't try one of these. It doesn't look very appetizing but does look similar to a pomegranite. Maybe if the goo balls were pink or red they'd be more appealing.
