Last weekend was the Pie competition at the Texas State Fair. The pictures show some of the activities of the day, beginning with Debbie's registration of her pies.
Sorry I've been away for a few days. I came home from my last business trip completely exhausted and it's taken all week to recover. I guess 3 business trips and two personal trips in 5 weeks, plus the pie competition at the fair, is just a bit too much for this boy.
We were planning to return to Stillwater this weekend to work on the house there, plus attend the wedding of the daughter of some very dear friends in Enid. But all of that had to be put off while I recovered.

Here are some of the 250+ pies that were entered in this year's competition. Yes it was far larger that the Payne County Fair in Stillwater OK years ago -- not exactly a surprise to us.
Debbie labored all day on Saturday last weekend, baking two great pies for the State Fair. The two individual pie pictures show her two terrific pies.
One was her ever-famous Lemon Meringue Pie. The other was a new one for Debbie, a Cranberry-Raisin Pie using the Pillsbury pie
crusts (a requirement since it was the Pillsbury competition). The pies turned out great, but alas, this year there were no ribbons. It was a good learning experience, learning the routine of the fair competition and the various things the judges look for.

No official count was given, but I counted at least 250 pies. I didn't count the number of judges. There were several tables full of judges. Each table judged certain categories of pies. Some of the pies entered looked delicious. The appearance of others made me thankful I was not a judge to have to taste them. There were ladies bringing in cart-loads of pies, entering in every category. Many of the ladies had been doing this for years and knew each other from previous years of competition.

Debbie says she'll be back next year to compete again and will be watching for special recipes that will enable her to show her pie-baking skills. I'm delighted to hear that -- because I'll get to sample the "test pies" throughout the year!
I'm proud of my Sweet Bride for jumping in to the competition of the Texas State Fair her first year in Texas!
