The Case of the Mysterious Howling Daschund!

Have you ever heard a Daschund howl? If so, you'll understand why I say it is a cause for laughter! It might be compared to the deep-voiced bass singing soprano. It takes a lot of effort for the little guy and it sure sounds funny when it comes out.

Today I was downstairs in my office when I heard Gabriel, our fine, handsome mini-Daschund, beginning to whimper and whine upstairs in the living room where he spends most of his day. I wondered about it, but was on a conference call so didn't go check on him. A bit later I heard that infamous Daschund howl. He started slow, winding it up from a deep start-up with several tries for a good howl until finally he was howling his heart out.

Up the stairs I went, just sure that he had tangled himself up in his comforter or something similar. But when I got to the living room, he was standing at the bottom of the stairs that go up to the bedrooms, howling away, looking at me with his little distressed look. And then I heard it --- apparently the electric rooster (aka alarm clock) had been set for "nap" instead of being turned off, and it was beeping loud enough to wake up anyone in the neighborhood who might be happing. No, I really wasn't napping!!. But Gabriel was. And he did not like having his nap interrupted by that loud beeping. So he howled and howled and howled -- until I heard him and came to the rescue.

By the time I got back downstairs from turning off the alarm, he was already back in his bed, looking at me with those sleepy eyes, anxious for me to return to the office. So I did. And the case was solved.

I know that funny howling sound from one of our dogs. He was just a tiny puppy and would howl if he couldn't locate our other dog, his best buddy, Suzy. You must be Gabriel's best buddy, Dad!
