Stone's River Battlefield

As we were driving south from Nashville toward Atlanta we came to Murfreesboro TN, site of the Stone's River Battlefield from the Civil War. At this site some 84,000 men from the North and South came together for a 3-day battle. More than 1/3 of them died in that battle.

Inside the Visitor Center were several life-sized displays showing the lives of those who were there to fight. The images show very young boys out there serving as men. Stories in the center told of young boys 11 years old leaving their homes to go be the drummers for the troops.

Prior to this stop we didn't know much about this battle except from small memories of U.S. History in High School.

So many men's lives were taken -- so many wives back home were left as widows. And just think -- they might not have known they were widows until the war was over and their man didn't come home.

Be sure to check out the battlefields around our country, reminding us the events of the past that gave us the country we have today. So many fought and paid the ultimate price so that we could have what some seem so eager to throw away. It was worth fighting for back then. It still is.
