I heard it on the radio this morning. Today is the 171st birthday for Texas. On this date, March 2, 1836, the Republic of Texas declared its independence and became the "country" in between the United States and Mexico.
Of course, any action has a reaction, and the reaction was that Mexico didn't like that. 13 days later the Alamo fell. But then came the battle of San Jacinto and everything started to change. The Republic of Texas remained that separate country until 1845 when it became a state in the United States of America.
I have to admit -- I didn't know this was a special day until I heard it on the radio. So to the former Republic of Texas, Happy Birthday!
By the way, Santa Ana (no kin to Santa Claus) was the leader of the army that defeated the Alamo and got defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto. There are a few cities that carry the name (such as Santa Ana, California), but the most common use of the name is that hot wind that sweeps across the southwest at times. Just a lot of hot air. What a namesake.
