A Great Start to the New Year

We sure started off the New Year in a great way. I read in one of the local newspapers a few days earlier of a special event taking place on New Year's Eve and we decided to go.

Have you heard of T. D. Jakes? He is Pastor (Bishop) of a gigantic church, The Potter's House, in South Dallas near the school where I completed my undergraduate studies. The main worship area seats about 10,000 people. For the New Year's Eve service, they said that the main worship area was filled and no seats available, plus all overflow seating areas were filled, with estimated 14-15,000 people there that night. The website for The Potter's House says their membership is about 77% Black, 13% Caucasian, 5% Hispanic, and 5% everyone else. That might have been a pretty good guess for the mix of people on New Year's Eve.

The music was glorious! We loved it! My goodness, there were some highly gifted people there leading the worship time! And that T. D. Jakes can preach the Word! The service was announced to have started at 10 pm, but they started some videos at 9:30. The service was starting to wind down, though not completely over, when we left about 1:15 am.

I have to tell you this, too. In order to seat that many people, they have a HUGE parking lot! The only place I have seen one larger is at Texas Stadium in Irving.

That was a wonderful way to bring in the New Year! The church is way too far away to go there regularly, though it was great to be in a worship service in which the people actively participated and with a spirit of expectation and anticipation.

Happy New Year!
