Have you had your "grapple" today? We were at the Wal-Mart Super Center in beautiful Elk River yesterday getting a fresh supply of fruit and veggies and saw something "new" -- at least it was new for Wallie's and for us. It was a package of "Grapples". Just what we needed -- another "new" fruit for which we need 5 a day.
So what is a "Grapple"? Just like it sounds, it is a cross between a concord grape and an apple. It looks like an apple, it feels like an apple inside and out, but it smells and tastes like concord grapes -- you know, like the Welch's Grape Juice kind. We have to wonder if they didn't "water" the grapple trees with grape juice, or fertilize it with unsold grapes.
It's one of those confusing fruits! If your eyes are open when you eat it, you expect it to taste like an apple --- which it doesn't. And if your eyes are closed when you eat it, you expect it to feel like a grape, which it doesn't. Some folks just can't leave creation alone, I guess.
I think I'll go grapple with the idea while I have one for an afternoon break. I wonder what this does to the old saying that my Mother always said, that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." That's another thought to grapple with.

Tyler bought one of those expensive 4-packs of grapples once. They smelled good! I believe they articially flavor them just like they do everything else. I think I'll stick with the normal apples.
Me too. You know me -- we had to try them, but I wasn't too impressed. There's just nothing like the real apple -- red delicious, Golden delicious, Honeycrisp, Cortland (those last two are cold climate varieties -- excellent!). Good stuff.
I won't be buying any more -- I would just walk by. You're not missing a thing unless you want an apple that smells like one of Radar's Grape soda pops. No big thrill. And for the price, you can buy many more good apples. But I couldn't pass up something to try like that.
